Step 1 Student Comments

“Step 1 gave me the opportunity to “try on” teaching. Even though I thought I had my path planned out, Step 1 opened my eyes to a bigger world with more career paths than I thought possible. One of the things I love about UAteach is the relationships I’ve built. From Step 1 I felt that my teachers, mentors, and classmates want me to succeed. I love being a part of a program that encourages me to try new things and do something for others.”

“Way back during my freshman year, I taught elementary classes with Alyssa DeGidio and I’m so thankful that we became friends and helped each other survive being math majors!”
- Erin Pietrowski, BA Mathematics, May 2016

“I remember spending days on lesson plans, trying to make everything picture perfect and worrying about messing up, but with practice I found myself just enjoying presenting new information to students and worried less about messing up.”
- Nick Gillette, BA Mathematics, May 2016

“As a freshman in high school I entered this program as it had JUST began. I wanted to teach high school math, but at 18 years old I was put in a 3rd grade science classroom. I’ve never been so scared in my life. Although it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, I’m thankful for that opportunity. It gave me confidence to get up in front of a crowd (of twenty 8 year old students) and also to grow with this program.

My teaching partner and I have tackled our college careers together and will soon be graduating together. Step 1 gave me the experience in the classroom some people don’t get until their junior or senior year. Some people may find out they don’t want to teach here, but for others it’s just the start of this wonderful journey and your growth as a teacher. The support system in this program is unbelievable. I would not have made it through college without this program and the people it has led me to.”

“Happy Hollow elementary, had a student start crying in my final lesson and was able to get the student to push forward and meet the goal of the day.”
- Collin Henderson, BS Biology, May 2016

“I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, and Step 1 reaffirmed that. I was so nervous to first teach, but as soon as I stood in front of the class, all my nerves vanished. Teaching is my calling.”
- Rachel Havens, BA Mathematics and Physics, May 2016

“Give it a try!  You might just fall in love with teaching, but you’ll never know till you try.

“Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark, professionals built the Titanic.”

- Kelsey Layton, BA Mathematics, May 2016
